But the DAF Leyland trucks are still the most important, large-scale and favorite project. Two dozen have already been delivered and are working hard to bring victory closer. Are the next three ready? We will not wait - we are putting them to work. But there is a nuance here, too.
These two spiders with legs are manipulator cranes. It takes one and a half tons and puts it on the platform itself. And few people know that 6 months ago, the search for trucks began with a task that Yuriy Biryukov was given in one of his sponsored brigades - to haul pallets of shells for M777s, they needed manipulators.
The shells for Soviet systems were always delivered in wooden boxes with caps. The thing is heavy, but it takes two people to load and unload it (and even one soldier can do it on adrenaline). But the shells for three axes are on a transportation pallet. And it has to be either lifted by a crane or... disassembled by hand, removed by hand, handed over, handed down. And the time is critical.
We then started looking for such vehicles. After all, a civilian vehicle would not do, we needed an all-wheel drive and high ground clearance. And so we found army DAFs in England. And then we squeezed out discounts for a long time and meticulously, because it's expensive to buy for 18,000 pounds, especially if you can eventually get the price down to 11,500. And that's exactly what was done.
